Centuries from Steve Smith and Travis Head put Australia on top despite a late burst from India's Jasprit Bumrah on day two of the third Test in Brisbane.

Smith and Head came together at 75-3 and shared a near-chanceless 241 for the fourth wicket, before Bumrah removed both and Mitchell Marsh with the second new ball at the Gabba.

Smith made 101 to end a run of 26 innings without a Test century, while Head crashed 152 off 160 balls for his second successive ton.

Bumrah returned to complete his 12th five-wicket haul in Tests, having earlier removed openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney.

Alex Carey and Pat Cummins shared 58 before the latter was dismissed late in the day as Australia reached 405-7 at stumps.

The five-match series is level at 1-1 after Australia's 10-wicket win in Adelaide last week.

India must win at least two of the final three Tests to guarantee a place in June's World Test Championship final at Lord's.

Defending champions Australia will reach the final if they win two of the remaining Tests.

After only 13.2 overs were possible on day one, more rain is forecast for the remainder of the game.

India finally have a breakthrough - but it took the new ball to do it, and they are now behind in the game.

Here's what happened in the first half of the evening session:

    • Steve Smith moved to his 33rd Test century and ended a run of 26 innings without reaching the landmark.
    • It moves him outright second for Test centuries for Australia, clear of Steve Waugh (32) and eight behind Ricky Ponting.
    • He found fluency throughout this innings, including some gorgeous straight drives, as he moved from his fifty to century in 57 balls.
    • It was his 10th Test century against India - a record alongside England's Joe Root.
    • He was dismissed for 101, nicking Jasprit Bumrah to Rohit Sharma at first slip.
    • It ended a 241-run stand with Travis Head for the fourth wicket. Head moved to his 150 shortly after the wicket.

Well, the afternoon session certainly belongs to Australia and they are thoroughly on top of the third Test now.

    Here's what happened:

    • Australia have reached 234-3 at tea - adding 130 runs in 27 overs in the afternoon session.
    • Travis Head reached his ninth Test century off 115 balls and follows up his match-winning ton in the second Test.
    • He was on 20 at lunch but accelerated through the gears in the second session, including moving from his half-century to century in just 44 balls.
    • There has also been a return to form for Steve Smith, who made his first half-century in eight innings off 128 balls. He has looked more fluent as his innings has progressed.
    • The pair have shared an unbroken 159 for the fourth wicket.

The first hour of the afternoon session belongs to Australia as Travis Head and Steve Smith continue to build.

    Here's what has happened:

    • Australia have moved to 158-3 at drinks.
    • Head has brought his third successive 50-plus score off 71 balls.
    • Smith has shown some fluency that has been missing in this series. He's unbeaten on 44 at drinks.
    • India lost a review after a failed check for lbw against Steve Smith. Akash Deep hit his pad as he shuffled across, but the technology showed it missing leg stump.
    • There has also been caught behind appeals against both Smith and Head.

"In the past hour we've started to see signs of the old Steve Smith," says England's Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan on TNT Sports.

Well, after a frustrating opening day where just 13.2 overs were possible, we had a full session of cricket!

    Here's what happened:

    • Australia moved from 28-0 to 104-3.
    • Jasprit Bumrah had Usman Khawaja caught behind in the fourth over of the day, before Nathan McSweeney edged to slip in his next over.
    • Bumrah has now been responsible for all four of McSweeney's dismissals in the series so far.
    • Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith shared 37 off 89 balls before the former edged Nitish Kumar Reddy to Virat Kohli at slip.
    • That came an over after Mohammed Siraj had switched the bails around in an attempt to bring a change of luck.
    • Siraj and India failed in a review for lbw against Smith, who offered no shot. The technology showed it was just clipping off stump and said umpire's call so India retained their review.
    • Siraj spent some time off the field with a leg injury. He has since returned.
    • Smith and Head guided Australia to lunch.
