'This has turned the Test match' - Head's best shots

Australia's bowlers backed up a majestic century from Travis Head on his home ground to put the hosts in a strong position to win the second Test against India.

Head played in a typically carefree manner on day two at the Adelaide Oval as his 140 off 141 balls provided the bulk of Australia's first-innings 337 in reply to India's 180.

Mohammed Siraj eventually dismissed Head as he collected 4-98, but it came too late for India who struggled to wrestle any kind of momentum on a second successive day of dominance for Australia.

Marnus Labuschagne's dogged 64 had earlier laid the platform for the hosts while the ever-dependable Jasprit Bumrah finished the pick of India's bowlers with 4-61.

Faced with batting the best part of an entire session under floodlights against a pink ball, India's top order wilted in the face of some skilful bowling - spearheaded by Scott Boland.

Australia captain Pat Cummins removed KL Rahul with a short ball before a disciplined fourth-stump line saw Boland snare two of India's star performers from their emphatic first Test win in Perth.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli were both drawn into defensive pokes at deliveries on an awkward length from Boland.

Mitchell Starc then found some of the swing which had brought him career-best Test figures of 6-48 on day one to remove Shubman Gill.

Cummins returned to bowl counterpart Rohit Sharma for six shortly before stumps with India still 29 runs adrift and Australia well placed to level the five-match series at 1-1 on day three.

Rishabh Pant, who made an enterprising 28 not out off 25 balls, will resume on Sunday alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy after he finished the day unbeaten on 15.

Australia now look to be in complete control of this Test match after India lost three wickets in their second innings under floodlights at the Adelaide Oval following Travis Head's magnificent century earlier.

Here's the situation just after the drinks break in the evening session:

    • India lost KL Rahul for seven after he gloved an attempted pull shot to short-pitched delivery from Australia captain Pat Cummins and Alex Carey claimed the catch.
    • Fellow opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (24) played fluently before he prodded at a delivery from Scot Boland and edged into the gloves of Carey.
    • Virat Kohli fell shortly after the drinks break when he edged Boland to Carey for 11.
    • Australia were bowled out for 337 shortly after the tea interval which gave the hosts a first-innings lead of 157 runs.
    • Mitchell Starc (18) was dismissed first ball after tea when he chipped to Mohammed Siraj into the hands of Harshit Rana.
    • Scott Boland was the last wicket to fall after he was bowled for a duck by Siraj, who finished with 4-98. Jasprit Bumrah finished the pick of India's attack with 4-61.

    Siraj bowls Head for 140

Australia have strengthened their grip on this Test match thanks to a brilliant century from Travis Head, and established a first-innings lead of 152 at the tea interval.

At the end of the second session here's the state of play:

    • Home favourite Head thrilled the Adelaide Oval crowd with some expansive stroke play before he fell for a magnificent 140 off 141 balls.
    • Head stylishly whipped Mohammed Siraj for six off his legs, but was bowled by a yorker from the India quick bowler next ball. Siraj gave Head a send-off after celebrating the wicket, which prompted a verbal exchange between the pair as the Australia batter left the crease.
    • A cameo from Mitchell Starc, who is 18 not out off 14 balls, continued the momentum following Head's innings.
    • Australia captain Pat Cummins (12) saw his stumps rearranged moments before the tea break after a full delivery from Jasprit Bumrah deflected off his pads.
    • Bumrah had earlier received treatment from the India physio on the field midway through an over after clutching his groin area, but was able to carry on bowling.
    • Alex Carey (15) fell shortly after the drinks break when he feathered a delivery from Siraj into the gloves of Pant.

    'Hometown hero' Head reaches century

Australia are starting to pile on the runs after the dinner break and Travis Head has well and truly taken the game to the India attack with a fluent century.

As the players take a quick break for drinks midway through the second session here's a quick recap of what's happened in the past hour:

    • On his home ground of the Adelaide Oval Head brought up his eighth Test century off 111 balls. It featured 10 fours and three sixes.
    • Head reached three figures with a nudge to mid-wicket off Ravichandran Ashwin and celebrated by placing his helmet on his bat handle and saluting the crowd.
    • The South Australian had a fortunate escape on 78 when he slashed at delivery from Harshit Rana and a thick edge flew between Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma.
    • Head also smashed Ashwin for a towering six straight down the ground in the 68th over. He attempted to do it again next ball but hit is skywards, only for Mohammed Siraj to shell the catch.
    • A Mitchell Marsh defensive prod to a delivery from India spinner Ashwin shortly after the dinner break saw him given out for nine after Pant claimed a routine catch behind. Marsh walked, however the technology suggested there was no bat on it.

'Horrible way to get out' - Bumrah removes Smith for two

Australia bowled out India for 180 on day one of the second Test at the Adelaide Oval and they resumed on 86-1 looking to build some sort of first-innings lead.

Here's what happened in the first session:

    • After a gritty innings under the floodlights yesterday Australia opener Nathan McSweeney could only add a solitary run to his overnight score of 38 before he edged Jasprit Bumrah into the gloves of Rishabh Pant.
    • That brought Steve Smith to the crease but he lasted just 11 balls after being strangled down the legside by Bumrah, as Pant took a smart diving catch to his left.
    • Marnus Labuschagne reached an obdurate half-century off 114 balls as he enjoyed a 65-run stand with the decidedly more fluent Travis Head for the fourth wicket.
    • Labuschagne was eventually dismissed for 64 when he slashed at a delivery from Nitish Kumar Reddy and was superbly caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully.
    • Head glided past fifty off 63 balls shortly before the dinner break and will resume on 53 along with Mitchell Marsh, who is unbeaten on two.

'Take a bow!' - Starc claims Test best figures of 6-48

Mitchell Starc claimed career-best Test figures of 6-48 as Australia seized the initiative on day one of the second Test against India.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to make first use of the pitch at the Adelaide Oval, but India were rattled out for 180 thanks to some high-class bowling from Starc, who confirmed his status as the most dangerous bowler in day-night Test cricket.

The left-arm quick set the tone for an impressive Australia attack when he trapped Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw with the first delivery of the match.

Starc's haul also included the top-order wickets of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli before another menacing spell later in India's innings blew away the lower order.

His figures eclipsed the 6-50 he took against Sri Lanka at Galle in August 2016 and underlined his mastery with the pink ball - nobody comes close to his 72 wickets in day-night Tests.

Nitish Kumar Reddy struck three sixes as he top scored for India with a counter-attacking knock of 42 off 54 balls, including a spectacular reverse scoop off Scott Boland.

Australia faced a testing session under the floodlights with Jasprit Bumrah hungry for wickets on his 31st birthday.

The India seamer was left looking to the heavens when Nathan McSweeney edged him to Rohit at slip on five, only for the chance to be grassed.

Bumrah subsequently removed fellow opener Usman Khawaja with a brute of a delivery which climbed into the left-hander's ribcage and nipped to take the edge with Rohit holding a more straightforward catch.

However, McSweeney and the under-pressure Marnus Labuschagne diligently battled through to stumps without further loss, and will resume on 38 and 20.

The concentration of the pair was not even broken by two brief floodlight failures and a spectator wobbling a beer snake next to the sightscreen.
