India's openers ensured they maintained their dominant position against Australia with an unbroken century stand on day two of the first Test in Perth.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul guided the tourists to 172-0 at close, a lead of 218.

Jaiswal, who is playing in Australia for the first time, has 90 and Rahul, who is opening with regular captain Rohit Sharma in India after the birth of his second child, is on 62.

Both were patient and willing to defend, before punishing any width or errors in length, on a pitch that carried nowhere near as much threat as the opening day when 17 wickets fell.

Australia were bowled out for 104 in the opening session, a first-innings deficit of 46.

They resumed on 67-7 and Jasprit Bumrah completed his five-wicket haul by removing Alex Carey with his first ball of the day.

Nathan Lyon soon followed but Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood saw off 110 balls for 25.

Only four Tests have been played at the Optus Stadium in Perth and all have been won by Australia, who have batted first on each occasion.

Australia will need a strong third day if they are to change that record.

  2. Australia restrict India but lead growspublished at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November

    Australia 104 (Bumrah 5-30) v India 150 (Hazlewood 4-29) & 106-0

Australia have limited India well in the first half of the evening session but are yet to find that crucial breakthrough. There have been chances though.

Here's what you need to know:

    • India have moved to 106-0, they lead by 152. Yashavi Jaiswal is 54 not out and KL Rahul is on 42.
    • Jaiswal's half-century came off 123 balls. That is his slowest in Test cricket, beating the 104-ball fifty he made on this debut.
    • He edged Mitchell Starc to Usman Khawaja at first slip just before the drinks break, but the catch was misjudged and went under Khawaja's fingers.
    • There was half a run out opportunity in the following over as Rahul set off for a quick single at the non-striker's end but Steve Smith's throw was too wide for Nathan Lyon to complete the run out.
  3. India lead by 130 at teapublished at 07:06 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November

    Australia 104 (Bumrah 5-30) v India 150 (Hazlewood 4-29) & 84-0

No wickets fell in a session for the first time in the Test as India dominated the afternoon session in Perth.

Here's what you need to know:

    • India have reached 84-0 at tea, a lead of 130. Yashasvi Jaiswal is 42 not out and KL Rahul is unbeaten on 34.
    • Rahul's edge has been found on four occasions, but each time the ball has fallen short of the slip cordon.
    • There is little movement on day two, after day one was helpful for the bowlers. "The pitch seems to have gone to sleep," says ex-Australia opener David Warner on TNT Sports.
    • Marnus Labuschagne went to the short-ball theory at the end of the session, and in a TV interview Travis Head suggested Australia may do that with their frontline seamers in the evening session.
    • Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 104, to give India a 46-run lead on first innings.
  4. India start well to extend leadpublished at 06:03 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November

    Australia 104 (Bumrah 5-30) v India 150 (Hazlewood 4-29) & 35-0

India have made a good start to their second innings and are slowly extending their lead. Here's what has happened so far:

    • India are 35-0 at drinks in the afternoon session, leading Australia by 81 runs.
    • Yashasvi Jaiswal (17*) and KL Rahul (12*) have been resolute in defence, but have put away any wide or overpitched deliveries that have been offered up by Australia.
    • Rahul has edged three times but each have fallen comfortably short of the slip cordon.
    • Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 104, to give India a 46-run lead on first innings.

"It's been quality play, there's nowhere near the movement that we saw yesterday. The rotation of strike has been excellent, they really have stolen some singles," said England's 2005 Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan on TNT Sports.

"It's been a really good start by the Indian pair."

Bumrah dismisses Carey to complete five-wicket haul

After a "ridiculous" opening day according to Australia's most successful Test pace bowler Glenn McGrath, the opening session on day two was more sedate.

    Here's what happened:

    • Australia resumed on 67-7, and were bowled out for 104 in the final over before lunch to give up a 46-run first-innings deficit.
    • Alex Carey was removed with the first ball of the second over by Jasprit Bumrah, to complete his five-wicket haul.
    • Nathan Lyon followed shortly after to leave the hosts 79-9 before Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood dug in.
    • The pair added 25 runs in 110 balls as India's bowlers turned to the short-ball theory and in-out fielders.
    • Hazlewood was dropped by Rishabh Pant, who seemed to misjudge the edge, when Australia were 83-9.
    • After one short ball by Harshit Rana, Starc exchanged words with the India quick, saying: "Harshit, I bowl faster than you." Harshit then turned round to Starc, who repeated "I bowl faster than you, I've got a long memory." Harshit responded with a wry smile.

  6. India in control against Australia as bowlers rally - day one reportpublished at 13:32 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November

Australia v India cricket highlights: Hosts collapse to 67-7

Australia collapsed to 67-7 as India rallied with the ball to seize the initiative - despite being dismissed for just 150 on an extraordinary opening day of the first Test in Perth.

After opting to bat first the tourists, who made a staggering six changes from their historic third Test defeat by New Zealand earlier in November, were reduced to 32-3 and 73-6.

Virat Kohli's struggles continued as he made just five, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal, both playing in Australia for the first time, were dismissed without scoring.

Rishabh Pant (37) and debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy (41) showed some form to counter-attack and drag India to 150, but they were bowled out within two sessions.

In reply, Jasprit Bumrah produced a breathtaking opening spell to leave Australia 19-3.

He removed debutant Nathan McSweeney lbw on review and had Usman Khawaja caught in the slips, before removing Steve Smith lbw first ball.

Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh both then fell cheaply, before Marnus Labuschagne, who batted resiliently for two off 52 balls, was trapped lbw by Mohammed Siraj.

Bumrah returned to remove Pat Cummins, as Australia reached 67-7 at stumps, and will resume 83 runs behind when play resumes at 02:20 GMT on Saturday.

The 17 wickets to fall is the most on the opening day of a Test in Australia since 1952.
