Rachin Ravindra's patient half-century led Chennai Super Kings to a four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Chasing 156 to win on a spin-friendly surface, Ravindra finished unbeaten on 65 from 45 balls as Chennai reached their target with five balls to spare.

Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad's more destructive 53 from 26 balls broke the back of the chase early on before a slight wobble to 116-5.

But Ravindra held the innings together comfortably, hitting the winning runs with a six from his New Zealand team-mate Mitchell Santner.

Wrist-spinner Vignesh Puthur was the pick of Mumbai's bowlers with 3-32, while England's Will Jacks bowled his international and Surrey team-mate Sam Curran for four.

Mumbai posted a stuttering innings of 155-9 as they struggled to recover from an early slip to 36-3, with captain Suryakumar Yadav making 29 and Tilak Varma added 31 but none of their batters were able to accelerate.

Afghanistan leg-spinner Noor Ahmad starred with 4-18, while seamer Khaleel Ahmed took 3-29 including the wicket of India's Rohit Sharma for a duck in the first over.

Chennai Super Kings are progressing nicely towards their target of 156.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad fell in the eighth over but his 53 from 26 balls at the top of the order has broken the back of the chase for his side.

New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra was able to settle into his innings while Gaikwad took control but he is holding the innings together with 26 from 23 so far.

It is a spin-friendly surface, proven by Noor Ahmad's 4-18 for Chennai, and wrist-spinner Vignesh Puthur currently has figures of 2-9 on his IPL debut for Mumbai.

With 10 overs remaining, Chennai only need another 60 runs.

A stuttering innings from the Mumbai Indians comes to an end as they post 155-9, boosted by a late cameo of 28 from 15 balls from all-rounder Deepak Chahar.

There were starts from Suryakumar Yadav, who made 28, and Tilak Varma with 31 but none of their batters were able to kick on to a meaningful contribution.

Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad was the pick of the CSK bowlers with 4-18, while seamer Khaleel Ahmed took 3-29.

England's Sam Curran only bowled one over in the innings which conceded 13, while Will Jacks made just 11 in Mumbai's innings.

Chennai Super Kings started brilliantly against Mumbai Indians having chosen to bowl first, reducing their opponents to 36-3 inside the first four overs.

Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed for a duck in the opening over, and fellow opener Ryan Rickelton made 13 before he was bowled by the same bowler.

England all-rounder Will Jacks was the third wicket to fall for 11 to Ravichandran Ashwin, but Mumbai skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma have steadied the ship with a calm partnership of 46 to reach 82-3 at the halfway point of their innings.

Suryakumar has 29 from 25 balls, and Varma has 27 from 18. It has been quite a contrasting encounter to today's earlier IPL match which saw 528 runs scored across two innings between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals.
