Sunrisers Hyderabad successfully defend their enormous total of 286-6 as last year's finalists open their IPL campaign with a 44-run victory.

They were set up by Ishan Kishan's unbeaten 45-ball century and Travis Head's 67 from the top of the order, with a powerplay score of 94-1 and 63 runs coming from the final five overs.

England fast bowler Jofra Archer claimed the unwanted record of the most expensive figures in IPL history with 0-76 from his four overs.

In reply, Dhruv Jurel's 70 and 66 from Sanju Samson kept Rajasthan Royals in check but their dismissals in the 14th and 15th overs ended any realistic chance of victory.

Royals fell short on 242-6, with Sunrisers skipper Pat Cummins struggling with 0-60 but Harshal Patel performed admirably with his 2-34 in a game where 528 runs were scored across both innings.

The second IPL match of the day has just started, with Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings.

Sanju Samson has been brought in as an impact player for Rajasthan Royals and the opener is keeping them in the game, with his 50 from 26 balls leading his side to 118-3 at the halfway mark.

But Sunrisers Hyderabad have so many runs to play with so they are still comfortably on top. The Royals still require a further 169 from 10 overs.

Simarjeet Singh took two early wickets with Yashasvi Jaiswal falling for one and captain Riyan Parag only making four. Nitish Rana also fell to Mohammed Shami for 11 as Royals slipped to 50-3 but Samson and Dhruv Jurel, who has 46, have led an entertaining recovery.

Sunrisers Hyderabad fall one run short of their own record for the highest IPL team total, but Rajasthan Royals and England fast bowler Jofra Archer takes an unwanted record with the tournament's most expensive figures.

Archer conceded 0-76 from his four overs, eclipsing Mohit Sharma's 0-73 from last season.

Sunrisers posted 286-6 with Ishan Kishan finishing unbeaten on 106 from 47 balls with 11 fours and six sixes, and Australia opener Travis Head adding 67 from 31.

South Africa's Heinrich Klaasen whacked 34 from 14 to help Sunrisers maintain the brutal run-rate throughout the entirety of their innings.

  5. Head falls for 67 but Sunrisers cruisingpublished at 10 overs

It's been a brutal start from Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have reached 135-2 from the opening 10 overs.

Australia's Travis Head smashed 67 from just 31 balls at the top of the order, with nine fours and three sixes in an opening stand of 45 in just three overs with Abhishek Sharma, who made 24 from 11.

Sunrisers finished the six-over powerplay with an incredible 94-1 and Rajasthan Royals' bowlers have had no answers, despite choosing to bowl first.

England bowler Jofra Archer's two overs have conceded 35 runs.

It is a very flat surface and the outfield is rapid so with this start, Sunrisers are eyeing a total of at least 250.
