India seal massive first Test win over Australia

India completed a stunning 295-run win over Australia in the first Test in Perth to continue their extraordinary run in the country.

They bowled Australia out for 238 in the final session on day four to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test series.

It means India have now won five and lost only two of their past nine Tests in Australia dating back to their 2018-19 tour.

West Indies are the only other team to have won a Test in Australia in that time.

Australia resumed on 12-3 after a devastating new-ball spell from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj late on day three - and that soon became 17-4 when the latter had Usman Khawaja caught behind off a top-edged pull.

Steve Smith was then superbly set up by Siraj, caught behind for 17 off one that straightened.

Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) counter-attacked but both fell in quick succession in the afternoon session to Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy respectively.

Off-spinner Washington Sundar had Mitchell Starc caught at short leg and bowled Nathan Lyon, before a superb Nitish Rana slower ball deceived Alex Carey to seal the comprehensive win.

India must win three of the next four Tests to guarantee their place in a third successive World Test Championship final.

Australia need five wins across this series and a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka to reach the final.

The second Test in Adelaide starts on 6 December.

Jurel takes 'an absolute beauty' to dismiss Starc

Another hour has been and gone and India have taken two more wickets, meaning they need just two to seal a huge victory.

Here's what happened in the hour before tea:

    • Mitchell Marsh dragged Nitish Kumar Reddy onto his stumps to fall for 47.
    • Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc then shared 45 for the eighth wicket, with Carey playing some beautifully timed pulls and drives.
    • That partnership was ended when Starc was supberly caught at short leg by Dhruv Jurel off Washington Sundar on the stroke of tea.
    • India captain Rohit Sharma - who missed this Test after the birth of his second child - has been seen batting in the nets.
  3. Bumrah leaves India four wickets awaypublished at 06:08 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2024

Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah brought himself back into the attack and found the breakthrough to leave India four wickets away.

Here's what happened in the first hour of the afternoon session:

    • Bumrah had Travis Head caught behind for 89 with a beautiful delivery.
    • The wicket ended a 82-run stand between Mitchell Marsh and Head for the sixth wicket. The pair were counter-attacking and finding scoring fairly easy.
    • Marsh was dropped at mid-wicket by Devdutt Padikkal on 13. It a tough chance as the pull came quickly, and it brushed Padikkal's fingertips.
    • Marsh has hit two enormous sixes - one a pull off Harshit Rana and another down the ground off Washington Sundar.
    • Former Australia opener David Warner has said Australia should see this as a "net session" ahead of the remainder of the five Test series.
  4. What happened in morning session?published at 05:22 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2024

India moved to within five wickets of victory in the morning session. Here's what you missed:

    • Australia, who resumed on 12-3, moved to 104-5 at lunch. They are chasing 534 for victory.
    • Jasprit Bumrah had an appeal for lbw against Steve Smith from the first ball of the day, but Bumrah had overstepped.
    • Usman Khawaja was dismissed in the second over of the day by Mohammed Siraj though. The left-hander attempted a pull but top-edged and Rishabh Pant made up some ground to his right to take the catch. That left Australia 17-4.
    • Steve Smith and Travis Head shared 62 for the fifth wicket before the former edged behind a wonderful delivery by Siraj to fall for 17.
    • Head and Mitchell Marsh guided Australia to lunch, who are chasing a world record total.
  5. Late Bumrah wickets after Jaiswal & Kohli centuries - read the day three reportpublished at 20:58 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2024

Rampant India take three early wickets to leave Australia reeling

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli hit imperious centuries before Jasprit Bumrah took two late wickets as India put themselves in a dominant position against Australia at stumps on day three of the first Test.

Opener Jaiswal's sublime 161 set the tone for India as he and KL Rahul compiled a record first-wicket stand of 201 for India in Australia.

That was followed by Kohli's zen-like unbeaten knock of exactly 100 at Perth's Optus Stadium as India declared their second innings on 487-6.

Set 534 for victory, a weary Australia were left with an awkward 24 minutes to negotiate before the close.

Rested and refreshed India stand-skipper Bumrah ran in with menace and trapped Nathan McSweeney lbw with the fourth ball of Australia's response.

Australia captain Pat Cummins then came out as nightwatchman and edged Mohammed Siraj to Kohli at second slip.

A fired-up Bumrah struck again in his third over as he had Marnus Labuschagne out lbw, ball-tracking technology backing up the on-field decision after the Aussie batter referred it.

With two days left to play there is, in theory at least, still time for Australia to either bat out for a draw or chase down a record total to win the match.

The current highest successful fourth-innings total to win a match is the 418-7 made by West Indies against Australia at St John's in May 2003.

Australia's highest fourth-innings chase to win a Test was the 404-3 they made at Headingley against England in July 1948.

However, with movement and uneven bounce on the pitch India are strongly positioned to win the opening match of the five-Test series.
