England have made it to drinks. Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes will get a breather too, having bowled unchanged relentlessly.

In the library doing an essay whilst everyone is out for Halloween. This England performance is not helping my mood.

These tactics are brainless. We have 50 overs here. Let's take 4 or 5 an over, in singles if need be, for the first 40 and then have a swing for the last 10. That should get us to 250-300.

    Richard in Bromley.

Hardly anyone in top five attempted to play a 50 over game. They are wafting at balls and the conditions do not appear overly taxing. It is very poor batting .

    Buttler 10, Curran 5

Jos Buttler is battling with his poor form. He's flickered every now and again with a couple of his boundaries but is not flowing. He has to dive to make it for a tight single at the end of the over here.

For me this isn’t about disastrous Ashes prep it’s about a team eighth in ODI rankings and what are they doing to change that.

Our inbox is not a pretty place right now. I take David's point about Phil Salt, given his fine T20 form. But he was dropped from ODIs after a poor run at the start of the year. He averages 20.33 in six matches this year.

England have a talented batting group but they're producing less than the sum of their parts.

Shocking series for England. You look at the squad and it looks really good on paper, but given the poor results - there needs to be a shake up of the squad & new players given an opportunity.

    Adam

Why on earth is England's most in form white-ball batter, Phil Salt, not playing? Smith has been abject since being elevated to the opening position on a selection hunch.

I love this plan that England have of luring the Aussies into a false sense of security for the Ashes.

So here's Sam Curran - a decent T20 biffer but not typically one for this situation.

Jacob Duffy fires one down the leg side for five wides which may be the first thing New Zealand have done wrong all day before the ball flies through the air again off another edge.

Curran gets four for it this time to get off the mark but I wouldn't say it was particularly convincing.

A great catch from Daryl Mitchell, who gets his big mitts on it. New Zealand have their fifth wicket and England's slide continues.

It's shocking to watch. Jacob Bethell, who had already survived a few scares, chases a wide-ish ball, edges and is caught well above his head by Daryl Mitchell at slip.

New Zealand look a class outfit. They take everything. England? The less said the better.

  10. Could England really miss out on automatic qualification at World Cup?published at 01:52 GMT 1 November

You have probably heard people mentioning England's current run in ODI cricket is putting their place at the 2027 World Cup at risk.

The top eight sides in the rankings - nine if co-hosts South Africa are in that group which appears likely qualify directly for that tournament.

England are currently eighth with West Indies and Bangladesh directly below them.

Harry Brook's side currently have a decent buffer over those two but they have easier fixtures on paper to come - and England seem unable to halt their downward spiral.

If they were to be overtaken by both sides then they would have to go into the qualifying tournament with the likes of USA, the Netherlands and Nepal.

  11. Eng 44-4published at 10 overs

More hooping inswing for Zak Foulkes results in an lbw shout against Jos Buttler but England's former captain has got himself outside the line. Buttler plays with the swing to clip the next one for four - a much better stroke than what we have seen before.

That ends the powerplay. Pretty even all things considered...

With an average of 26.66, Smith and Duckett are England's worst opening partnership (min. nine innings) in ODIs over the last 15 years. With regards to dismissal rate, the partnership has lasted an average of 19.7 deliveries per innings, this is by far the lowest of all regular opening partnerships for England in this format.

  13. Eng 40-4published at 9 overs

England come perilously close to a full house on their bingo card as Jacob Bethell is almost run out, having set off for a run after hitting the ball to mid-on. He's smiling at the end of the over as the ball flashes through the gully for four.

For those pointing out these conditions are the same as England early season; worth remembering England players tend to take a break at that time.

  15. Eng 31-4published at 8 overs

    Bethell 7, Buttler 0

The eighth over is a maiden from Zak Foulkes, although it would be wrong to say Jacob Bethell has played it conservatively.

Dan Nixon: I don’t know about any individual players for a Halloween XI but it would appear that we are a few balls and wickets away from another England Horror show.

Ryan: It’s all well and good England having this grand plan of extreme pace and going at Australia but if the batters don’t give them any runs to play with it’ll end up being another hugely disappointing tour. This ODI series has been a disaster.

Tom: This is just a precursor for what’s to come in Australia, isn’t it?

    Jem Green

The first five overs today have been the most challenging batting conditions to the start of an innings this series, with the most swing and seam on offer of all three grounds; yet England have played more attacking shots in this initial period today than the previous two ODIs.

  19. Eng 31-4published at 7 overs

Jos Buttler, another man horribly out of form, is completely beaten by his first ball. He loses his balance and almost topples over as he misses a drive.

A huge wicket for New Zealand and an excellent piece of bowling from Jacob Duffy. Harry Brook was trying to run it away for a single but the dangerman is gone for just six.
