Jos Buttler made a half-century in his first innings since resigning as England's white-ball skipper but was unable to prevent Gujarat Titans side from slipping to an 11-run defeat to Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League.

Buttler acknowledged he had "reached the end of the road" when he relinquished the position at the Champions Trophy last month following England's disappointing tournament exit.

After a relatively lean run of scores in England colours, Buttler was back to something like his fluent best as he hit 54 off 33 balls on his debut for the Titans.

The 34-year-old whacked four fours and two sixes in an innings bristling with intent before he inside edged a full delivery from Marco Jansen on to his stumps.

Punjab's total of 243-5 would, however, prove comfortably beyond Buttler and the rest of his Titans team-mates as Punjab seamer Arshdeep Singh squeezed any hope at the death en route to figures of 2-36.

Sai Sudharsan top scored for the Titans with a 74 off 41 balls while Sherfane Rutherford and Shubman Gill chipped in with 46 and 33 respectively.

  2. Buttler at the crease after Maxwell strikespublished at 10 overs

    • Opener Sai Sudharsan has biffed a 31-ball half-century as Gujarat Titans reached 104-1 in the 10th over in pursuit of 244 for victory against Kings Punjab.
    • England batter Jos Buttler is also at the crease and hit two fours early in his innings.
    • Titans lost captain Shubman Gill for a 14-ball 33 in the sixth over after a leading edge off a delivery from Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was safely pouched by Priyansh Arya in the ring.
    • Should the Titans win the match it would be the second-highest successful run chase in IPL history - behind only the 262 Punjab Kings made to beat Kolkata Knight Riders in last year's tournament.
  3. Shreyas blasts 97* as Titans set 244 to winpublished at 20 overs

    • Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer blasted an unbeaten 97 off 42 balls as his side posted a challenging 243-5 from their 20 overs in their IPL clash against Gujarat Titans.
    • India batter Shreyas' knock on his debut for the Kings was the highest of his IPL career, featured nine sixes and five fours and came at a strike rate of 230.95.
    • Shreyas was unable to get on strike in the final over of Punjab's innings - and give himself a shot at making a maiden IPL hundred - as Shashank Singh pummelled Mohammed Siraj for 23 runs to finish on 44 not out off just 16 balls.
    • Earlier, Marcus Stoinis whacked a quickfire 20 before he fell to Titans left-arm spinner Sai Kishore.
    • Kishore finished the pick of Gujarat bowling attack with 3-30 from his four overs.
  4. Kings lose wickets after positive startpublished at 11 overs

    • Punjab Kings lost two quick wickets just after the halfway point in their innings when Azmatullah Omarzai (16) and Glenn Maxwell (0) fell in consecutive balls to left-arm spinner Sai Kishore as they slipped to 105-4 in the 11th over.
    • Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has looked in good touch, though, and heaved Kagiso Rabada for a huge six into the stands early in his innings.
    • Earlier, opener Priyansh Arya hammered 47 off 23 balls, before he sliced a pull off Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan into the hands of Sai Sudharsan at short cover.
    • Rabada bagged the wicket of Prabhsimran Singh (5) in the fourth over, caught by Arshad Khan who had dropped earlier on.
    • Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill won the toss and decided to bowl first in Ahmedabad.
