Mitchell Starc claimed career-best Test figures of 6-48 as Australia seized the initiative on day one of the second Test against India.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to make first use of the pitch at the Adelaide Oval but India were rattled out for 180 thanks to some high-class bowling from Starc.

The left-arm quick set the tone for an impressive Australia attack when he struck with the very first delivery of the match as Yashasvi Jaiswal was trapped lbw.

Starc's haul also included the top-order wickets of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli before another menacing spell later in India's innings blew away their lower order.

His figures eclipsed the 6-50 he took against Sri Lanka at Galle in August 2016 and underlined his mastery with the pink ball - nobody has more than his 72 wickets in day-night Tests.

Nitish Kumar Reddy struck three sixes as he top scored for India with a counterattacking knock of 42 off 54 balls, including a spectacular reverse scoop off Scott Boland.

Australia faced a testing session under the floodlights with Jasprit Bumrah hungry for wickets on his 31st birthday.

The India seamer was left looking to the heavens when Nathan McSweeney edged him to Rohit at slip on five, only for the chance to be grounded.

Bumrah subsequently removed fellow opener Usman Khawaja with a brute of a delivery which climbed into ribcage and nipped to take the edge with Rohit holding a more straightforward catch.

However, McSweeney and the under-pressure Marnus Labuschagne diligently battled through to stumps without further loss, and will resume on 38 and 20.

The concentration of the pair was not even broken by two brief floodlight failures and a spectator wobbling a beer snake next to the sightscreen.

'What is going on?!' - Australia India Test plunged into darkness

Australia have started their first innings under lights at the Adelaide Oval and it has been tough going for their batters against India.

As the players take a drinks break, here's what has happened in the past hour:

    • Jasprit Bumrah, on his 31st birthday, has given Australia's batters a stern examination with a spell of top-class fast bowling.
    • Rohit Sharma dropped Australia opener Nathan McSweeney on five at first slip after he nicked off to Bumrah, although the India captain's view of the catch was partly obscured by the diving Rishabh Pant.
    • Bumrah gave India a breakthrough after a superb delivery to dismiss Usman Khawaja. The Australia batter was forced to defend a delivery angled into him by Bumrah which nipped off the seam and took the edge of his bat. Rohit claimed a routine slip catch.
    • Marnus Labuschagne has nervously played and missed a few times against Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj as he looks to regain some form after a miserable time of late.
    • Play briefly delayed on two occasions by floodlight failure at the Adelaide Oval.

'Take a bow!' - Starc claims Test best figures of 6-48

Spearheaded by six wickets from left-arm quick Mitchell Starc, Australia have continued their fine start to the day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval and dismissed India for 180.

Here's a quick recap of what what occurred in the remainder of the second session:

    • Ravichandran Ashwin made a run-a-ball 22 but his breezy knock was ended by Starc. Ashwin failed to dig out a full inswinging yorker from Starc and decided to review, but the ball-tracking technology backed up the on-field decision of out.
    • Three balls later and Starc had his 15th five-wicket haul in Tests courtesy of another full ball which beat the drive of Harshit Rana and bowled him through the gate for a duck.
    • Nitish Kumar Reddy counterattacked for India and hit three sixes, including two in an over off Scott Boland one of which was an outrageous reverse scoop.
    • Australia skipper Pat Cummins left India nine wickets down when Jasprit Bumrah edged him into the hands of Usman Khawaja at first slip
    • Starc wrapped up India's innings when Reddy (42) went for a big shot down the ground but mistimed it and skied it off the toe of his bat. Travis Head pouched a simple catch to leave Starc with career-best Test figures of 6-48, eclipsing the 6-50 he took against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2016.
    • "I feel the ball has been coming out right for a while," Starc said. "I thought we used the swinging conditions quite well. We want to take the momentum back in this game."

India struggling as Pant falls to short ball from Cummins

Australia's bowlers continue to cause India problems with the pink ball at the Adelaide Oval.

Here's what happened in the first hour of the session after the dinner break of this day-night Test:

    • In the third over of the session Rishabh Pant attempted a booming drive off a delivery from Scott Boland and the ball flew low to Nathan McSweeney at a fine gully, but he spilled an awkward catch.
    • Boland got his reward later in the over, though, when a delivery nipped back off the seam and struck India skipper Rohit Sharma below the knee roll. Rohit pondered a review after being given out, but walked off.
    • Pant briefly counterattacked for India before he departed to a brute of a delivery from Australia captain Pat Cummins. It climbed into the India batter, clipped the shoulder of his bat, and Marnus Labuschagne claimed a comfortable catch at gully.
    • Moments before drinks Nitish Kumar Reddy pulled out of a delivery from Cummins late on due to a fly in his helmet. The umpires called dead ball.
    • An aggressive bouncer from the Aussie skipper struck Reddy on his forearm and the ball flew over the head of wicketkeeper Alex Carey for four leg byes.

    • Australia left-arm quick bowler Starc claimed a wicket with the very first ball of the match as he trapped star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw for a duck with a full delivery which swung late.
    • KL Rahul and Shubman Gill initially steadied the ship for India as they added 69 for the second wicket before Starc had the former caught at gully for 37 with a delivery which climbed off the pitch.
    • Starc then bagged the key wicket of Virat Kohli - scorer of a century in the first Test - for seven as he again found some bounce off the surface and the India batter edged to Steve Smith at second slip as he attempted to withdraw his bat.

    • India resume on 82-4 after the interval.

Rampant India take three early wickets to leave Australia reeling

Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne faced significant criticism after his side's opening-Test defeat against India in Perth.

The 30-year-old managed just five runs in the match, which is consistent with a negative trend over the past two years.

His dismissal in the second innings - attempting to leave a ball that came back in and trapped him lbw - has been described as "inexplicable"., external, external

His latest failures led Australian sports website CODE to suggest, external, external Labuschagne was "kissed by lady luck" at the start of his career and that he has "ruined himself".

BBC Sport, and data analysts CricViz, have looked at how Labuschagne's career is on a downward curve - and how Australia may act.

India seal massive First Test win over Australia

India completed a stunning 295-run win over Australia in the first Test in Perth to continue their extraordinary run in the country.

They bowled Australia out for 238 in the final session on day four to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test series.

It means India have now won five and lost only two of their past nine Tests in Australia dating back to their 2018-19 tour.

West Indies are the only other team to have won a Test in Australia in that time.

Australia resumed on 12-3 after a devastating new-ball spell from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj late on day three - and that soon became 17-4 when the latter had Usman Khawaja caught behind off a top-edged pull.

Steve Smith was then superbly set up by Siraj, caught behind for 17 off one that straightened.

Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) counter-attacked but both fell in quick succession in the afternoon session to Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy respectively.

Off-spinner Washington Sundar had Mitchell Starc caught at short leg and bowled Nathan Lyon, before a superb Nitish Rana slower ball deceived Alex Carey to seal the comprehensive win.

India must win three of the next four Tests to guarantee their place in a third successive World Test Championship final.

Australia need five wins across this series and a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka to reach the final.
