Lucknow Super Giants secured an impressive and comprehensive five-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad to earn their first win in this year's Indian Premier League.

Lucknow did well to limit Sunrisers destructive batting line-up to 190-9 and then cruised to their target with 3.5 overs to spare.

Nicholas Pooran crashed 70 from 26 balls and Mitchell Marsh hit a typically powerful 52 from 31.

Sunrisers piled up 286-6 against Rajasthan in their opening match but, with some predicting a score in excess of 300 on another flat pitch, were checked by the loss of regular wickets.

Seamer Shardul Thakur dismissed Abhishek Sharma for six and Ishan Kishan a duck in consecutive balls, while Travis Head threatened in hitting five fours and three sixes.

But Head was bowled by seamer Prince Yadav for 47 and contributions of 32 from Nitish Kumar Reddy, 26 from Heinrich Klaasen and 36 by Aniket Verma were not enough.

Shardul finished with 4-34 and is the tournament's leading wicket-taker after eight matches, despite being unsold in the auction and being signed as a late injury replacement.

Lucknow Super Giants are flying in pursuit of 191 against Sunrisers Hyderabad:

    • They are 120-2 after nine overs, leaving them 71 more to get from 66 balls.
    • Nicholas Pooran crashed 70 from only 26 balls before being dismissed lbw by Pat Cummins in the nine over.
    • Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa was brought in as Sunrisers impact sub and his first over cost 19 with Pooran hitting two sixes and a four.
    • Lucknow were 4-1 in the second over after Aiden Markram hit Mohammed Shami to mid-off.
    • Mitchell Marsh remains on 37 not out alongside Rishabh Pant.
  3. Lucknow limit Sunrisers' destructive batting orderpublished at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    • Sunrisers Hyderabad have posted 190-9 from their 20 overs. After all of the talk of a score towards 300 beforehand, that feels a little under par.
    • After the early loss of Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, Travis Head looked ominous in reaching 47 from 28 balls, seemingly keen to capitalise on being dropped twice.
    • But Head was bowled by the impressive Price Yadav in his second IPL match.
    • There were contributions of 32 from Nitish Kumar Reddy, 26 from Heinrich Klaasen and 36 by Aniket Verma but regular wickets from Lucknow always checked the score.
    • Klaasen was dismissed in a remarkable fashion when Prince dropped a catch in his follow-through but deflected the ball onto the stumps to run out Klaasen at the non-striker's end.
    • Shardul Thakur, who was only signed as a late injury replacement which ruled him out of a spell with Essex, finished with 4-34 and is now the season's leading wicket-taker.
  4. Head aims to punish Lucknow dropspublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

It hasn't quite been the run fest we expected but Lucknow Super Giants have not helped themselves:

    • Shardul Thakur took two wickets in two balls during his second over, having Abhishek Sharma caught at deep square leg for six and Ishan Kishan - Sunrisers Hyderabad centurion in their first match - caught down the leg side for a first-ball duck.
    • Since then Travis Head has gone on in typically aggressive fashion but has been dropped twice.
    • The first, when Head was on 35, was a poor drop by Nicholas Pooran at long-on after Head skied a slog into the air.
    • The second was by bowler Ravi Bishoi - a tougher, one-handed chance with the ball smashed back at him.
    • Head remains on 47 not out from 27 balls. Sunrisers are 71-2 after seven overs as the players take the first strategic timeout.
