Rain and a little bit of cricket. It has been another frustrating session for Australia as they look to force a result and take a 2-1 lead in the five-Test series.

Here's what happened in the middle session on day four:

    • India moved from 167-6 at lunch to 201-7 at tea. They trail by 244 runs and need 45 more runs to avoid the follow-on.
    • A total of 13.2 overs were possible in the afternoon session as rain delayed the restart, caused an hour delay mid-session and then resulted in the players going for tea slightly earlier than the rescheduled time.
    • Australia captain Pat Cummins found a breakthrough, forcing Nitish Kumar Reddy to drag onto his stumps.
    • That ended a 53-run stand for the seventh wicket with Rachin Ravindra, who has brought up his half-century.
    • There was a very tight run-out call against Mohammed Siraj as he dived to make his ground at the non-striker's end. The bat was initially not grounded, but third umpire Chris Gaffaney decided there was not conclusive evidence that the bail was dislodged before Siraj's bat was grounded.
    • Australia are without seamer Josh Hazlewood, who is likely to miss the rest of the series with a calf injury.

Australia have confirmed that seamer Josh Hazlewood is likely to miss the rest of the Test series against India due to a calf injury.

The 33-year-old felt tightness in his calf during the day four warm-up, and left the field after bowling one over in the morning session.

He was sent for scans and Australia said the injury is likely to result in him missing the fourth and fifth Tests in Melbourne and Sydney.

The right-armer missed the second Test win in Adelaide with a side injury.

He was replaced by Scott Boland, while uncapped duo Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett were added to the squad.

Australia v India cricket highlights: Steve Smith's stunning catch after first-ball drop

It was a busy opening session with wickets, drops, injuries and rain all blended in.

Here's what you need to know:

    • India moved from 51-4 to 167-6, still trailing by 278. They need another 79 to avoid the follow-on.
    • Whether Australia would enforce the follow-on is a different question though, because seamer Josh Hazlewood is off the field with calf tightness. He's been sent for a scan after coming off following his first over on day four.
    • Steve Smith dropped KL Rahul at second slip off the first ball of the day. It was a chance he should have taken and Rahul was on 33 at the time.
    • India skipper Rohit Sharma edged Pat Cummins to fall for 10 as his personal struggles continued.
    • Rahul and Jadeja shared a 67-run partnership for the sixth wicket, either side of a 25-minute rain delay.
    • Rahul was the second wicket to fall on day four. Smith redeemed his earlier drop with a brilliant take at slip off Nathan Lyon to remove the opener for 84. That means his drop earlier cost Australia 49 runs.
    • Heavy rain delayed the start of the afternoon session.

Australia seamers reduce India to 51-4

Australia's seamers ensured they stayed in control of the third Test against India, despite rain decimating much of day three in Brisbane.

The hosts added 40 runs, either side of a rain delay, to their overnight 405-7, with Alex Carey the last man out for 70.

India's reply was delayed by more rain, before they slipped to 22-3.

Yashasvi Jaiswal hit Mitchell Starc for four off the first ball of the innings, but was caught at mid-wicket next ball.

Shubman Gill was superbly caught at gully by Mitchell Marsh, before Virat Kohli feathered Josh Hazlewood behind.

The rain returned as Rishabh Pant was walking to the crease and then much of the afternoon and evening session was wiped out by more precipitation, a wet outfield and bad light.

There were four spells of cricket - with each lasting 11, 23, seven and 17 balls respectively.

Pant was dismissed in the third of those, edging Pat Cummins behind, before KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma guided India to 51-4 at stumps.

While 98 overs can be bowled on each of the remaining days, a result may be difficult to achieve with more rain forecast.

The five-match series is level at 1-1 after Australia's 10-wicket win in Adelaide last week.

India must win at least two of the final three Tests to guarantee a place in June's World Test Championship final at Lord's.

Defending champions Australia will reach the final if they win two of the remaining Tests.
