BDO World Darts: Martin Adams loses to Jimmy Hendriks

Three-time champion Martin Adams was knocked out of the BDO World Darts Championships with a shock 3-2 defeat by Dutch teenager Jimmy Hendriks.

The 52-year-old Adams, who won the Lakeside title in 2007, 2010 and 2011, struggled with his doubles throughout.

Hendriks took the first set before second seed Adams levelled the match.

The 18-year-old debutant went 2-1 ahead and with Adams failing to find the doubles, the Dutch player capitalised to secure a place in the second round.

Adams's exit means there will be a new winner this year, as all the former champions who started the tournament have been knocked out.

Top seed Stephen Bunting advanced to the second round thanks to a 3-2 win over Jamie Wilson.

Bunting won the opening set but Wilson responded by taking the next two sets to go 2-1 up. Bunting started the fourth set strongly with a 130 checkout and went on to set up a decider.

The 27-year-old Liverpudlian took control in the fifth set and, although he missed 60 for the match and then double five, sealed the win on double one to set up a meeting with Darryl Fitton in the next round.

Steve Douglas is also through, less than a month after suffering a heart attack.

The 35-year-old from Gillingham beat Scotsman Gary Stone 3-1 and will now face Tony O'Shea on Tuesday.

In other matches, England's Scott Mitchell beat Mark Barilli of Scotland 3-2, Jan Dekker edged Jeffrey de Graaf 3-2 in the all-Dutch clash and Wesley Harms of the Netherlands defeated Rune David of Norway 3-1.

In the women's quarter-finals, Sharon Prins of the Netherlands beat Irina Armstrong of Germany 2-1, Anastasia Dobromyslova of Russia progressed at the expense of England's Lorraine Farlam and another Englishwoman Lisa Ashton downed compatriot Deta Hedman 2-0.
