World Darts Championship: Whitlock and Pipe in shock defeats

Australian Simon Whitlock has been runner-up in both the BDO and PDC World Championships

Seventh seed Simon Whitlock suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the PDC World Darts Championship, losing 3-1 to world number 34 Darren Webster.

Englishman Webster averaged more than 94 to defeat Australian Whitlock, the 2010 runner-up.

The 48-year-old told Sky Sports: "I'm so happy. Simon wasn't at his best but I tried to stay concentrated."

Qualifier Laurence Ryder also caused an upset, winning the last six legs to beat 17th seed Justin Pipe 3-2.

"I didn't really have many nerves, I felt good and was playing well and in the last set it all kind of clicked together," said the Australian.

Ryder, who moved from Derby to Australia 13 years ago, will face 16th seed Terry Jenkins in the second round.

Ledbury-based Jenkins beat John Weber 3-1 to set up the meeting with the Australia Grand Prix champion.

Fourth seed Gary Anderson avoided the same fate as Whitlock and Pipe, defeating American Scott Kirchner 3-1 and he will next play Jelle Klaasen.

Australian Kyle Anderson, who hit a nine-dart leg at last year's championship, beat Steve Beaton, the 1996 BDO world champion, 3-0.

Anderson, who takes on Andy Hamilton in round two, said: "I'm feeling brilliant. I didn't play as well as I can but I hit my doubles when I needed to."

Robert Thornton, the 2012 UK Open champion, recorded an impressive 3-0 victory over Suffolk's Andrew Gilding to set up a second-round tie against 2010 quarter-finalist Ronnie Baxter, who beat Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney 3-1.

Belgian number two Ronny Huybrechts beat 28th seed Andy Smith 3-0, and will face 2014 runner-up Peter Wright.
