Dutch world number one Michael van Gerwen continued his remarkable year by retaining his Grand Slam of Darts crown with a 16-8 win over James Wade.

The 27-year-old has won 24 PDC titles in 2016 following his triumph over world number six Wade.

The final was low-key after Van Gerwen played superbly in Sunday's 16-10 semi-final win over Peter Wright, where he averaged 111.17 and landed 17 180s.

"I think I proved that I can still win when I'm not 100%," Van Gerwen said.

"I've won most of the tournaments this year and I love winning. I feel confident and I feel good, and I just want to compete and play as well as possible in any tournament I play."

Wade, who beat world champion Gary Anderson 16-14 in his semi-final in Wolverhampton, opened up a 3-1 advantage over Van Gerwen in the final before the Dutchman won 10 of the final 13 legs.

Van Gerwen will be looking to win his third Players Championship Finals trophy in Minehead this weekend, before the World Championship begins at the Alexandra Palace in London on 15 December.
