Tournament favourites Wales and last year's runners-up Austria produced a thrilling match

Wales' Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup of Darts after a thrilling win over Austria.

The Wales pair, who won the 2020 event, were pushed all the way in Frankfurt by last year's runners-up Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez.

Price produced a run of brilliant check-outs to edge Suljovic, but Rodriguez beat Clayton to level.

That sent the tie to a deciding doubles with Wales just edging it 4-3.

Price was first up against Suljovic at the Eissporthalle, producing a huge 156 finish to take the opening leg, but the Austrian then moved into a 3-2 lead to throw for the match.

Price found another massive finish, this time of 149, to level and book a deciding leg which the Welshman took with another sublime out of 142, but Rodriguez then defeated Clayton 4-2 to take the match to the pairs.

With Wales' noses in front at 3-2, Clayton missed two darts for the match and Mensur took advantage to send the pairs into a seventh and final leg.

Crucially Wales threw first and held their nerve and it is Price and Clayton, making their fifth consecutive tournament appearance as a partnership, who advance to face home side Germany on Sunday.

Germany sailed past Denmark after Gabriel Clemens and Martin Schindler both won their singles ties.

In the first round, second seeds but bookies' favourites Wales enjoyed a comfortable 5-2 victory against Lourence Ilagan and RJ Escaros of the Philippines.
