World Rowing: GB mixed coxed four win adaptive gold

Pam Relph, Naomi Riches, James Roe and David Smith will be hoping to be part of the GB team at next year's London Paralympics

The Great Britain mixed coxed four won Britain's second gold in the adaptive classes at the World Rowing Championships in Slovenia.

The crew of James Roe, Dave Smith, Naomi Riches and World Championship debutant Pam Relph with cox Lily van den Broecke went off strongly.

By 250m they led defending world champions Canada by a length and went on to win by over four seconds.

It followed Tom Aggar's gold in the arms-only single sculls.

The win gave Roe, Smith and Riches their second world title after they were part of the 2009-winning boat.

"That feeling as you cross the line is just indescribable everything from the whole season comes back to you", said Roe, who also won a silver medal in the event last year.

"It's been a really good season and this is the perfect end to it."

Smith's victory was particularly sweet after recovering from surgery to remove a tumour on his spine last year and he is now targeting more success at next year's London Paralympics.

"Our whole goal this season was to win this race," he said. "Now that we've done that we will take a little break and then come back and work hard so that we're ready to do it again in our own back garden"
