Paralympics 2012: David Weir wins gold in T54 5,000m

Britain's David Weir sprinted to a sensational victory in the T54 5,000m to win his third Paralympic gold medal.

The wheelchair race was a tactical affair until Weir produced his trademark burst of power to sprint away from his rivals over the final 100m.

Weir finished in 11 minutes 07.65 seconds, ahead of Australia's Kurt Fearnley and France's Julien Casoli.

"You dream about winning on home turf," said the 33-year-old. "I'm a London lad, it's a dream come true."

Weir, who will try to defend his 800m and 1500m Paralympic titles later in the week, is also set to race in the marathon.

He won ParalympicsGB's only two athletics golds at the Beijing Games four years ago in those middle distance races and he picked up his third career title with a terrific sprint finish.

"I was in great form coming in to this, all the other races this year were just preparation for this," he added.

"My girlfriend had tickets but I told her not to come because she's eight months pregnant.

"She came on Friday [for the heat] and she said she was very emotional and we've got a one-year-old [son] so it would be very tough.

"But her family and a lot of my friends [are here] I saw them on the back straight."

The victory gave the British team its fourth athletics gold of the Games, while upping Weir's personal medal tally to seven.
