Wright has made more than 150 SPL starts for Kilmarnock

St Johnstone have signed defender Frazer Wright from Scottish Premier League rivals Kilmarnock.

The 31-year-old was a free agent after his Rugby Park contract expired and has agreed a two-year deal.

Kilmarnock signed the left-sided central defender from Stranraer six years ago and had hoped to negotiate a contract extension.

He missed the end of last season after suffering a shoulder injury against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park in April.

Wright is St Johnstone's fourth acquisition of the close season, following the signings of David Robertson from Dundee United, Sean Higgins from Dundee and Callum Davidson from Preston.

And his arrival provides cover for the departed Michael Duberry, who signed a two-year deal at Oxford this week.

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes told his club website: "I feel an experienced centre-half is vital to the team and we have seen the benefit of having Michael Duberry here over the last couple of seasons.

"Frazer is someone who has played season after season for Kilmarnock - a team in the top six of the SPL.

"He was a mainstay in that side and has all the physical attributes needed for our defence.

"He has a presence in both boxes, doing the basics well as a defender and offering a goal threat at set pieces.

"This is a very important - and I would even say fantastic - signing for St Johnstone and I could not be more pleased."

Wright could be followed out of Rugby Park by captain Craig Bryson, with Kilmarnock close to agreeing a fee with Derby County for the Scotland midfielder.
