Plymouth Argyle midfielder Kari Arnason has been sacked by the club after refusing to go without full pay for a seventh consecutive month.

Players at the club were offered only 30% of June's wages by administrator Brendan Guilfoyle.

Arnason decided not to sign the necessary wage deferral form leading to his dismissal after two years at Home Park.

The 28-year-old, now a free agent, is set to go on trial with Hearts.

Since joining Plymouth in 2009, Arnason made 72 appearances for the Devon side in both central defence and midfield, scoring three goals.

Plymouth Argyle's playing staff have not been paid in full by the club since December, relying instead on loans from the Professional Footballers' Association.

"I didn't expect to get sacked for not signing it," Arnason told Sky Sports. "I knew the club didn't have any money so I wasn't forcing their hands to pay me.

"We weren't getting paid so why sign something saying I'm not going to get paid? It didn't make any sense to me so I just said well I'm not going to sign it."

Plymouth, who are close to agreeing takeover terms with a secretive Irish consortium, have been in administration with debts of over £17m since March.

Lead administrator Guilfoyle said: "Kari refused to sign the deferral form and that put him at risk. He has been dismissed, but we have given consent for him to find another club.

"He knew what the implications of what he has done would be he hadn't signed the deferral, he would be dismissed - he walked into this knowing what he was doing. We had no alternative."
