York City sign midfielder Patrick McLaughlin

McLaughlin joined Newcastle at 16

York City have signed 20-year-old midfielder Patrick McLaughlin on a two-year deal following his release by Newcastle United.

The former Newcastle reserves skipper has caps for Northern Ireland at every level from under-15 to under-21.

McLaughlin told BBC Radio York: "I thought York was the best club for me. The gaffer has given me the chance to come down here and play some football.

"My aims are promotion and hopefully to play the best football of my career."

McLaughlin, who signed a professional contract at Newcastle in 2008, added: "I've learnt a lot of things up there but now it's time for me to show what I can do on a regular basis at first-team level.

"I'm really excited for the season ahead. I've played against Conference teams in pre-season friendlies. I'm very impressed with the level of football in this league.

"I think it will definitely help me to improve as a player."

York manager Gary Mills said: "He's a good midfield player, good on the ball, with good vision. He will get us a few goals and I feel he's the right age.

"A few people are saying I maybe should be going for a bit more experience but I think the likes of Patrick are going to shock a few people. They're not boys, they're men.

"He's not afraid. He's a winner, he's hungry and that's why I've brought him to this club - to help me and the rest of the players take this club forward."
