Swansea secure loan deal for Spurs' Steven Caulker

Swansea City have agreed a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to take defender Steven Caulker on a season-long loan.

Caulker, 19, impressed during a loan season at Bristol City last term.

Premier League newcomers Swans will pay an initial fee for the England Under-19 international, and the deal includes an option to review the loan in January.

"We are delighted to have agreed terms with Tottenham regarding a deal for Steven," said Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins.

Caulker, who is 6ft 2ins, made 31 appearances for Bristol City last season, scoring twice, before a knee injury forced him to miss the final eight games.

The Championship side failed to extend the loan for another season, with Spurs keen to send him to a Premier League club.

Caulker will face competition from captain Garry Monk, Ashley Williams and Alan Tate for the centre-back spots at Swansea.

"We feel his general size and ability are perfect qualities to add to our team," added Jenkins.

"Steven is a young, upcoming player that is a big talent, and he is looking forward to being part out our squad in the Premier League.

"It is an exciting signing for us. There was other interest in him prior to this deal being agreed, but Tottenham felt it was perfect for Steven to continue his progress here."

Caulker made his Tottenham debut in last season's 1-4 Carling Cup defeat to Arsenal before then being sent to Ashton Gate.

He faced Swansea twice, winning away in November and losing at home in February.
