Guernsey had to settle for silver in the final event of the 2011 Island Games as they lost 4-2 to the Isle of Wight in extra-time.

Ross Allen put Guernsey ahead inside five minutes but goals from Charlie Smeeton and Ryan Woodford gave the hosts the lead.

Guernsey, who last played in an Island Games final in 2005 when they lost to hosts the Shetland Islands 2-0, took the game to 2-2 and into extra-time with a goal from Matt Loaring in the 86th minute.

After Allen hit the crossbar Smeeton struck again for the home side to give them the advantage during the first period of extra time.

Chasing an equaliser in the second period Guernsey were caught at the back as Ian Seabrook gave the Isle of Wight breathing room and sealed the game.

Tony Vance, Guernsey's senior coach, said: "We came here to win gold, we nearly achieved that, I'm proud of the guys the way they put tremendous effort in."

The silver medal took Guernsey's total at the top of the medal table to 41 golds, 41 silvers and 25 bronzes.
