The 30-year-old centre-back has made 174 appearances for Rangers during three spells at the west London club.
Shittu has 28 caps for Nigeria and has played for both Watford and Bolton in the top flight.
He told QPR's official website: "I am pleased to have my future sorted out and am delighted that I will be spending the next year with QPR."
The defender added: "I had other options available but I love this club and to have been involved in our promotion from the Championship last season is something I will never forget.
