Wigan bid for Peter Odemwingie rejected by West Brom

Odemwingie scored 15 league goals in his first season with West Brom

West Bromwich Albion have rejected an offer from Wigan for Peter Odemwingie.

The Nigeria striker has been linked with several clubs this summer but Wigan are the first to make a bid, although the figure was not disclosed.

However, Baggies sporting director Dan Ashworth says the club will not sell the 30-year-old and confirmed they are in discussions over a new contract.

"We have no intention of selling Peter and we are a bit disappointed that Wigan have tabled this offer," he said.

"We spoke to Wigan beforehand and made it clear Peter was not for sale, but they still proceeded to lodge a bid - which has been flatly rejected.

"We are in discussions with Peter over a new and improved deal to reward him for his efforts last season and we are very hopeful these talks will reach a successful conclusion.

"This summer, we have made it our number one priority to keep our core players, like Peter, and strengthen the squad around them as we endeavour to firmly establish this club in the Premier League."

Odemwingie, who has two years remaining on his current contract, scored 15 league goals in his first season with the West Midlands club and played a vital role as they avoided relegation.

The Nigeria international joined the Baggies from Lokomotiv Moscow for £1.5m in August 2010.

His 15 goals from last season is the highest tally by an Albion player in the top flight since Garry Thompson hit 19 during the 1984-85 season.
