Stoke's Matthew Etherington has undergone a scan on an injured shoulder following the 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

The winger fell heavily following an aerial challenge and was given oxygen after he left the field clutching his arm in the second half.

Etherington, 30, was taken to hospital on Sunday and is now awaiting the results of the scan.

It was poor timing for Etherington, with Stoke meeting Swiss side FC Thun in the Europa League on Thursday.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis will hope that the shoulder is not dislocated, with Stoke looking to qualify for the Europa League group stages in their first season in Europe since the 1970s.

A dislocated shoulder suffered by Manchester United's Rafael da Silva in training this week has ruled him out for about 10 weeks.

There are fears over Rory Delap, too, who was taken off with a hamstring problem.

"We will have to wait and see how they are," Pulis said. "But it makes it even more important that we bring in four or five players over the next couple of weeks to bolster the squad."
