Norwich City have released midfielder Stephen Hughes from his contract by mutual consent.

The 28-year-old, whose deal was set to expire in the coming summer, had not featured for the Canaries since September 2010.

He spent part of last season on loan at MK Dons, where he featured six times.

The Scot has scored eight goals across 12 league starts and 18 substitute appearances since arriving at Carrow Road from Motherwell two years ago, external.

After starting his career at Rangers, where he made 43 starts in the Scottish Premier League, he made a £100,000 switch to Leicester, before heading to Motherwell 100 games later.
