Torquay's Martin Ling says his side are 'best in England'

Torquay manager Martin Ling has claimed that his side are the best in the country - on current form.

The Gulls beat Shrewsbury 1-0 on Saturday and have now won 12 of their last 15 league games.

"Over the last 15 games we've been the best side in the country. If people aren't taking notice then they're being foolish," Ling told BBC Radio Devon.

"We won five on the trot before the game and I think that was shown. It was a quality game of football."

Torquay currently sit in 4th place in the League Two table, three points behind leaders Cheltenham.

Ling was awarded manager of the month for January before the game, while defender Mark Ellis scooped player of the month, but the manager knows there is a lot of work still to be done.

"It isn't about a month of a season, it's about 46 games and at the moment we have played 29 of those," the former Cambridge boss added.

"It has been excellent so far but if we don't put the last 17 games together like we have done with the first 29 then we will end up with nothing apart from a few plaudits and a few (individual) trophies at the end of the season.

"We want to go up, or get into the play-offs. That is the real achievement."
