Gillingham keeper Paulo Gazzaniga praised after win

Gillingham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga has been hailed as the best custodian in the Football League by team-mate Charlie Lee.

The 20-year-old Argentine saved a penalty in injury-time before Gillingham's winner in the 5-4 victory over Hereford on Tuesday.

Defender Lee told BBC Radio Kent: "He's the best goalkeeper outside the Premier League. He's some talent."

And captain Danny Kedwell said: "He's brilliant. He saved us."

He added: "It could have been the end of the game."

Gazzaniga signed for the Gills after being released by Valencia in the summer but had to bide his time behind Ross Flitney in the pecking order in the first half of the season.

Flitney's knee surgery paved the way for the keeper to receive an extended run in the first team and he has kept two clean sheets in five matches.

Despite making an error for Hereford's third goal, manager Andy Hessenthaler reserved special praise for his new number one.

"We love him to bits," he said. "The best goalkeepers in the world make mistakes but he came off the pitch and apologised to me.

"You saw his reaction at the end going towards the Rainham End, he loves playing for this football club. He's a great kid and he's still learning the game."

When Lee, who scored twice during the win over Hereford, realised the comments might attract some attention from bigger clubs, he joked: "We've got him for two years. Whether we keep him after that, who knows? Actually no, he's rubbish. Nobody sign him."
