Rotherham United appoint Crawley Town boss Steve Evans

Rotherham have appointed Crawley Town boss Steve Evans as their new manager.

The 49-year-old, who has been in charge at Crawley since 2007 - leading them to the Blue Square Bet Premier title last season - has signed a three-year deal.

He replaces Andy Scott, who was sacked in March for poor results, with Rotherham currently 10th in League Two, six points off a play-off place.

Evans's fellow Scot, first-team coach Craig Brewster, will take caretaker charge of Crawley until the summer.

Assistant manager Paul Raynor has also left the Red Devils.

Both teams are in action at 1500 BST on Monday, Rotherham at home to Cheltenham and Crawley away at Barnet. Caretaker manager Darren Patterson will remain in charge for the Millers game.

Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart said: "The board and myself were extremely impressed with what Steve had to say and matched our vision and ambition for Rotherham United.

"We have taken our time, looked at a number of high calibre applications but Steve stood out and we are delighted he has agreed to take the job."

Crawley, who face an FA charge after a brawl at Bradford, are 14 points ahead of the South Yorkshire club in fourth.

A club statement said: "The club would like to place on record its appreciation of Steve's efforts.

"The club would urge all of our supporters to get behind Craig and the squad as we push for promotion to League One."

Evans was Boston United manager between 1998 and 2007 but was suspended for 20 months and convicted of tax fraud while in charge at the club.

He was given a 12-month suspended sentence for disguising wages and bonuses as expenses at the Lincolnshire club.

The club were docked four points and fined £100,000 by the FA.

Boston Evans and assistant Raynor resigned shortly after.

Evans and Raynor signed new contracts at Crawley in February 2011 that ran until the end of the 2014 season.

During his time at Crawley he led the club to a record 105 points as they topped the Blue Square Bet Premier and saw his side earn a fifth round FA Cup tie at Manchester United.
