Scunthorpe's Paul Reid 'desperate' for David Mirfin stay

Scunthorpe United defender Paul Reid is hopeful that fellow defender David Mirfin will return to the club on a permanent basis.

Mirfin, 27, left the Iron for Watford last summer but returned to Glanford Park on loan in January.

"He's been instrumental in improving our results in the back half of the season," he told BBC Radio Humberside.

"I'm desperate for him to sign here next year. We need people like him at the club."

He added: "I've spoke to him on a number of occasions and I'm doing all I can to persuade him.

"I think he'd be more than happy to come here. He knows the place, he knows the players and he's well liked."

Meanwhile, Reid is adamant that the club should not go overboard in celebrating their League One survival.

The Iron ensured their third-tier status last week despite losing at Huddersfield but the former Barnsley and Colchester man knows it has been a poor season.

"At one point we were in dire trouble so we've got to be relieved and pleased," he continued.

"On the other hand we shouldn't be celebrating and tapping ourselves on the back, ultimately it's been a disappointing season."
