Ronnie Moore aims to strengthen Tranmere defence

Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore has said strengthening his defence is becoming his main close-season priority after seeing his side lose 4-2 at Colchester.

Moore told BBC Radio Merseyside there was no excuse for the poor standard of defending on Saturday.

"I didn't think we needed that many defenders but, after seeing that, we obviously do," said Moore, who returned to the club as manager in March.

"For me, that's more of a major concern than trying to find a new striker."

Under Moore, Tranmere have risen from 19th to 13th in the table and would have moved up to 10th with a win at Colchester.

The former Rotherham boss is now turning his attentions to next season and the players he wants to keep at Prenton Park, as well as those he wants to try and sign.

"The players that we're looking for will be the ones that nearly everybody's after," continued Moore.

"We need a couple of strikers and a couple of wide men because we'll have next to nothing when all the loanees go back."

Tranmere end the season with a home game against Scunthorpe on Saturday.
