Euro 2012: England player ratings against France

England drew 1-1 against France in their opening game of Euro 2012 at the Donbass Arena, Donetsk.

Joleon Lescott put England in front with a header from a Steven Gerrard free-kick, before Samir Nasri equalised with a 20-yard strike.

It was Roy Hodgson's first competitive match in charge of England since his appointment as coach and the result was a decent one against a France side which have been revitalised under coach Laurent Blanc.

JOE HART (GOALKEEPER) - 7

Guy's view: "Apart from one uncharacteristic fumble early on, as assured and confident as ever. No chance with the goal. Important late save from deflected Benzema shot."

GLEN JOHNSON (RIGHT-BACK) - 7

Guy's view: "Defensively sound for most of the game. Got in to cover centre-backs superbly with nick away from Benzema's toes. Positive on rare sorties forward."

Guy's view: "Did his job well and typically strong in the air. Full concentration throughout. Hard to think of a mistake."

Guy's view: "Got in to head England in front with his first international goal. Good with defensive work and tackling, but perhaps distribution questionable at times."

ASHLEY COLE (LEFT-BACK) - 7

Guy's view: "England's most reliable defender - and maybe even their best for a long time now. No concerns with him."

JAMES MILNER (RIGHT MIDFIELD) - 6

Guy's view: "Superb energy levels as you would expect every time. Got through loads of work. Fluffed his big chance to score at 0-0 though."

STEVEN GERRARD (CENTRAL MIDFIELD) - 7

Guy's view: "Some good attempts to play the killer ball through the French defence - but guilty of trying to force it too often, rather than keep the ball. Excellent defensively in terms of tackling and blocking."

SCOTT PARKER (CENTRAL MIDFIELD) - 7

Guy's view: "Got better as the game progressed and thwarted any number of attacks with timely tackles. A real nuisance for the skilful France attacking quartet. Looked surprised to be subbed."

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN (LEFT MIDFIELD) - 6

Guy's view: "A few signs of early nerves and looked the raw talent that he is. Left the impression that this could be a big tournament for him as he settles in. He just might be a threat."

ASHLEY YOUNG (FORWARD) - 6

Guy's view: "Linked up with Welbeck nicely in the early stages but faded from the game. Didn't drop back to help out the midfield as much as he perhaps needed to."

DANNY WELBECK (FORWARD) - 8

Guy's view: "Star performer right from the start. Looks completely at home in international football at the highest level. Not just a good touch, but puts the work in too."
