Hereford United manager Martin Foyle still hoping to strengthen

Hereford United manager Martin Foyle is still hoping to further strengthen his squad before Friday's Blue Square Bet Premier opener at home to Macclesfield.

The Bulls are scheduled to play 12 league games in the first two months of the season and Foyle would feel happier with a little more depth to his squad.

"I'm trying to do something," he told BBC Hereford & Worcester. "I think it's only healthy that we keep looking

"Is 18 players enough going into eight league games in August?"

New Bulls boss Foyle has so far brought in seven players at Edgar Street this summer . . . keeper James Bittner, defenders Luke Graham, Andy Gallinagh and Chris Carruthers, winger Marley Watkins and strikers Marlon Jackson and Ryan Bowman.

But Foyle knows his squad is on the small size if the Bulls are to challenge at the right end of the Conference table - and attempt an instant return to the Football League.

"I think it's a bit of a risk," he said. "And the chairman is fully behind me and appreciates the situation."

Friday's visitors Macclesfield were the other team relegated from the Football League at the end of last season.

But Foyle insists that last season will have little bearing on what happens come Friday night (10 August, 19:45 BST) as both squads have been transformed over the summer months.

"I saw them on Saturday and they have changed it around a bit," added Foyle.

"I was actually speaking to their assistant manager from last year. They had no money last season but, all of a sudden, they have found pots of money for this year.

"So they are certainly going for it. They have got a big squad of 24 or 25 players and it will certainly be a hard opening test but something that we will relish.

"It's a nice one, isn't it? It's the first game of the season and it is at home and on the television.

"I think they will quite a few scouts looking around and we are setting the season off, so let's hope we get off to a good start."

Hereford United v Macclesfield Town will be live on 94.7 FM on BBC Hereford & Worcester with the build-up starting at 19:05 BST.
