Hartlepool picked up their first victory of the League One season at the expense of Scunthorpe.
Jonathan Franks put the hosts ahead midway through the first half with a powerful finish at the far post.
Iron midfielder Josh Walker was sent off when he handled Antony Sweeney's header on the line, but Steve Howard's penalty was saved by Sam Slocombe.
But Luke James did put the game to bed late on when took Andy Monkhouse's pass on his chest and slotted the ball home.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Scunthorpe United manager Alan Knill told BBC Radio Humberside:
"First half, we didn't really have a go. Second half, we did and had more of the game and more of the chances - but you've got to put it in the back of the net and keep it out of ours.
"We're just not executing. Some of the passing was really sloppy first half, slow, no tempo, too many touches - all the things we ask them not to do.
"Don't get me wrong, we talk about passing it but you have to be more direct and we want to overplay at times.
"It's basic stuff, there's nothing that the players didn't know about Hartlepool, nothing at all."
