Terry Butcher rues sluggish Inverness start against Celtic

Terry Butcher felt Inverness Caledonian Thistle were to blame for their own downfall in their 4-2 defeat by Celtic.

Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt put the visitors ahead within 25 minutes and Neil Lennon's side were 4-0 up before Ross Draper struck twice for Inverness.

"Celtic caught us on a very bad day. We made it a good day for them. We shot ourselves in the foot," said Butcher.

"We never got started. We just didn't pass the ball or move as we can do but I am pleased we got two goals back."

The Inverness Caley boss added: "You don't meet many teams like Celtic in the SPL.

"I was annoyed that people think this is the worst Celtic team ever. That is a load of tosh.

"We knew we would be up against a good Celtic side but we never envisaged giving them a two-goal start as easy as that.

"We gave Celtic a comfortable afternoon, much more comfortable than I'd ever thought we would do.

"I still thought at half-time if we could keep going and get a goal then who knows, but then we conceded straight away to make it 3-0."

Celtic's third was scored by Charlie Mulgrew from a well-worked free-kick and Watt added their fourth.

A week ago Butcher celebrated as his team, reduced to 10 men, came back from two goals down to gain a draw at Hearts.

However, the goals by Draper came too late in the game to spark hopes of an even more dramatic comeback.

"It was good for Ross Draper to score the two goals," said Butcher

"They helped send the crowd away a lot more happy. It could have been more than 4-0, let's be honest about that.

"The players are an honest bunch of boys. They will be the first to put their hands up and say 'we weren't at the races".
