Hartlepool 0-5 Coventry

Coventry City scored five second-half goals as John Hughes's Hartlepool reign got off to a miserable start.

Carl Baker drilled home from 20 yards, before Sky Blues top scorer David McGoldrick calmly converted from the spot after Peter Hartley handled.

Baker volleyed in his second from 10 yards and Frank Moussa finished a swift counter-attack to curl in a fourth.

Substitute Adam Barton rounded off the scoring for the visitors when he rifled home from 16 yards.

McGoldrick's goal made him the first Coventry player to score in five successive away games since the club's all-time record scorer Clarrie Bourton in 1931.

The Sky Blues handed a debut to on-loan Sunderland left-back Blair Adams, whose signing was confirmed before the game.

Sky Blues manager Mark Robins told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire:

"In the first half we were testing the water. But they've come out and delivered a really good performance in the second half.

"I'm delighted because it's more like we want to see. And we would have been disappointed if we had conceded.

"It was a good day all round, but we don't get carried away. All credit to the supporters because they were really noisy and gave us good support again."
