Sunderland will recall midfielder David Meyler from his loan spell at Hull City after their match at Derby on Friday.

The 23-year-old was set to remain with the Tigers until 1 January but injuries have left Martin O'Neill's side short of cover in midfield.

O'Neill said: "They play tonight and he would be recalled for the Christmas period, which we will have to do."

The Republic of Ireland international has made seven appearances for Steve Bruce's side and scored twice.

O'Neill suggested last month that Meyler was likely to be recalled before the end of his loan spell.

Meyler's exit is another blow for Hull, after goalkeeper David Stockdale was recalled by parent club Fulham earlier this week.
