Uefa Regions' Cup: Jersey aim to progress after opening win

Jersey captain Luke Watson says they have set their sights on becoming the first England representative side to progress to the final stages in the Uefa Regions' Cup.

They beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in San Marino on Wednesday to jointly top their group with Northern Ireland.

"That's an incentive to go on and win the next two games now," Watson told BBC Radio Jersey.

"That's what we've come here to do and that's what we're going to do."

The island side face Northern Ireland's eastern region on Friday in what could turn out to be the group decider.

Northern Ireland beat the hosts 1-0 in their opening game and are therefore below Jersey on goals scored.

"We've got to carry on, we've got to take the momentum into the next game.

"The confidence couldn't be higher, everyone's buzzing, even the lads that didn't play. It's a very proud moment, I can't explain it," Watson said.

He praised the fighting spirit of his teammates for clinging on to their lead as the Republic put their goal under siege in the final stages of the game.

"It was a bit backs to the wall in the last 10 minutes, but we held on, and that's what we seem to do," he added.

"We've got a good tight unit here, we always fight to the end, that's what we do, and we showed it there again.

"They didn't give up, they were a big side, but we've got lads in there who've got big hearts and we showed that."
