Burton Albion: Gary Rowett free to leave in the summer

Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson will not stand in manager Gary Rowett's way if he chooses to leave the League Two club in the summer.

Rowett, 39, has guided the Brewers to the brink of automatic promotion in his first full season in charge.

But Robinson admits going up to League One may not be enough to keep him.

"If Gary gets an offer from a bigger club with a bigger financial base and he decides to take it, then good luck to him," Robinson told BBC Radio Derby.

"We know what we've got to spend. If he decides to leave, we will then start again and find somebody else."

Rowett joined the club as assistant to Paul Peschisolido in 2009 and was put in temporary charge when the Canadian was sacked in March last year before being given the manager's job on a non-contract basis two months later.

He lost five of his 10 games in charge last term, but stopped the slide towards the relegation zone.

This season, impressive home form has carried the Brewers to third place in League Two and they guaranteed themselves a play-off berth with Saturday's 1-0 win over Plymouth.

If they win their two remaining games at Bradford and at home to leaders Gillingham, only Rotherham, who have a game in hand, could deny them automatic promotion.

"You have to say wow, what a season Gary is having in his first as manager, joined by assistant Kevin Summerfield," Robinson added.

"After two years battling relegation it is tremendous achievement, he has put together the strongest squad we have had in the Football League and has made some excellent loan signings as well."
