Dundee United have rejected an offer from Serie A club Catania for striker Johnny Russell.

The Italian club, currently ninth in Serie A, have made two offers to United within the past three weeks.

Their latest bid of about 600,000 Euros (approximately £515,000) was rejected by the Tannadice board as it did not match their valuation of the player.

Celtic are understood to be monitoring the 23-year-old Scot's situation closely.

Russell has a year left on his current contract and United hope to persuade him to extend his stay at Tannadice.

However, they are likely to accept an offer which meets their valuation this summer if it seems that the player is unlikely to accept a new deal.

Russell, who has also been watched by a host of English clubs this season, is currently out of action with a broken fibula.
