St Johnstone: Steve Lomas likens side to Bayern Munich

St Johnstone manager Steve Lomas says his side are reaping the benefits of copying the pressing style of Champions League finalists Bayern Munich.

Saints beat Dundee United at Tannadice for the first time in nearly 13 years.

"We always say that the best footballers in the world do the other side of the game well," Lomas said.

"You look at [Arjen] Robben and [Franck] Ribery and how well they press and work. It's testament to our boys that they want to do that."

St Johnstone sit fourth in the Scottish Premier League but remain just a point behind Inverness, who occupy the third place which brings European football for next season.

Despite a lively opening from United, their Perth visitors gradually took the match by the scruff of the neck.

Liam Craig, who will join Hibernian in the summer, scored his seventh goal of the season before half-time.

"Once we got nailed on to how they were playing we were pretty comfortable," Lomas told BBC Radio Scotland.

"It's not very often you come to Tannadice and your goalkeeper doesn't have to make a save. So from that point of view it was very pleasing."

Lomas felt the large St Johnstone following at Tannadice helped his side get their first win in 14 meetings against the Tangerines.

"It's another proud achievement for the boys and it's no coincidence given that there were 1,500 supporters here," added Lomas.

"I hope the supporters realise what it means to the lads to come out and have that support - the boys will go that extra mile and it certainly lifts your game.

"Our aim is to take it [the European push] to the last game of the season."
