Kaizer Chiefs win South African Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs have won the South African Premiership for the first time in eight seasons, led by Scottish coach Stuart Baxter.

The 59-year-old former South Africa coach was appointed in May 2012 and he becomes only the second coach to win the league in his debut season.

Chiefs wrapped up the title when they gained a point after a 1-1 draw at home to SuperSport United on Wednesday.

Baxter watched the game from the stands as he served a suspension.

Doctor Khumalo, who oversaw the team for the final matches of the season, was quick to pay tribute to Baxter.

"People did not give him a chance when he came here back in May. They questioned his CV but the club new exactly what they wanted to achieve," Khumalo told the club's website.

"The coach brought new ideas and made the players believe in themselves. He also made the players realise the importance of donning the gold and black.

"It was not planned that I had to take the bench without him this evening. We have worked as a team for the entire season.

"Preparation started at training and I am glad the boys pulled it off. Words cannot describe how I feel about this victory."

Baxter was coach of Bafana Bafana between 2004 and 2005, a position he took up directly after leaving his two-year-tenure as England Under-19 coach.

The Wolverhampton-born coach was manager of Finland's national side before he joined Kaizer Chiefs.
