Yeovil Town: Paddy Madden pays tribute to Gary Johnson

Yeovil play-off final goalscorer Paddy Madden has thanked boss Gary Johnson for reigniting his career after the Glovers' promotion to the Championship.

Madden joined from Carlisle in October, where he had scored twice in 36 games.

And after his 23rd goal since his move opened the scoring in Sunday's 2-1 win over Brentford, Madden praised Johnson.

"At the start of the year I was sitting in the stands. Gary took a chance on me and I've shown what I can do," the striker told BBC Radio Bristol.

"He's been amazing for me. If he hadn't taken a chance on me, I would probably be back home in Ireland playing. I can't thank him enough."

Following Sunday's win over Brentford, Johnson - in his second spell as Yeovil manager - has now won promotion with the Somerset side three times, having initially helped them into the Football League in 2003.

Their climb through the leagues is remarkable given that their fourth-placed finish in League One this season was their highest ever position.

And Madden admits he was delighted to have been a part of their rise into the second tier of English football.

"To score one of the goals that takes us to the Championship is amazing, it's obviously a goal I will never forget," the 23-year-old said.

"When the ball came in, the defenders were a couple of yards off, so the first thing I thought was to shoot, and thankfully it went in.

"[When the final whistle went] it was indescribable, I was on top of the world. The fans all deserve it, they've stuck with us all season. It's a great club to be with."
