Wrexham captain Dean Keates has signed a new one-year contract with the club.

The 34-year-old midfielder was initially unimpressed by the club's offer and revealed he had a two-year deal from another club to consider.

"It's a great club with a great fanbase and it's all geared for us to go forward," said Keates.

Stiker Jay Colbeck, 19, has also signed for another year, as player-manager Andy Morrell aims to retain the majority of last season's squad.

Kevin Thornton, Stephen Wright, Leon Clowes, Andy Coughlin, Steve Tomassen and Anthony Stephens have already signed new contracts, while Morrell is waiting to hear whether Martin Riley, Johnny Hunt and Joe Clarke will accept offers to stay.

Morrell has been eager to wrap up new contract negotiations quickly so he can then concentrate on finding new recruits.

Finding a striker is the manager's priority after losing top-scorer Danny Wright to Forest Green Rovers.

Chris Westwood, Declan Walker and Jamie Morton have been released from the squad that reached the Conference Premier play-off final and won the Football League Trophy.

Morrell has yet to meet with veteran midfielder Glen Little, whose current contract expires in the summer.
