Real Madrid want to make Cristiano Ronaldo the "best-paid player in the world" as they look to build the club's future around him.

The Portugal forward, 28, has been linked with a summer return to Manchester United, external or a move to Chelsea., external

"We want to build the Madrid of the future around him," Madrid president Florentino Perez told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

"And I would like Cristiano to be the best-paid player in the world."

Ronaldo became the world's most expensive player, external when he signed for Real Madrid from Manchester United for £80m in June 2009.

He has scored 55 goals in 55 games in all competitions this season, having reached the 200 mark overall for Real Madrid earlier this month.

Ronaldo said in January that he would see out his current contract, which expires in 2015, but was unsure where his career would take him after that.

He has since been linked with a return to Manchester United, who he left in a £80m move in July 2009, external and with whom he had an emotional reunion in the Champions League in March, as well as French league winners Paris St-Germain.

Chelsea have also been linked with the former Sporting Lisbon man, with Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho rumoured to be close to a Stamford Bridge return., external

Perez added: "Cristiano told me in the summer he was sad and I told him we would do everything possible for him to be content.

"I don't know if he has an offer from PSG. I think Cristiano is the best player in the world."
