Flybe Gatwick withdrawal could affect Guernsey FC

The end of Flybe's services between London Gatwick and Guernsey could affect Guernsey FC, according to secretary Mark Le Tissier.

Flybe will axe Guernsey to Gatwick services at the end of March after selling their landing slots to Easyjet.

With no guarantee that Easyjet will keep the service, it could see fewer seats for teams and supporters.

"It may affect the capacity for our fans to travel to the UK and UK teams to travel here," Le Tissier said.

Guernsey's government-owned airline Aurigny will still fly the route, and as they are sponsors of Guernsey FC, the club itself should not be affected by the change.

But Le Tissier is worried about the impact it could have on other teams and supporters coming to Guernsey, and those following the Green Lions in the south of England.

"Unless the capacity is increased by Aurigny, or another service provider comes in, seats might be more difficult to find or more expensive," Le Tissier told BBC South West Sport.

"No-one knows what's going to happen with the airline routes, so at this stage we don't need to worry about it and we'll deal with it when it happens," he added.

Guernsey FC's promotion to the Isthmian league Southern Division One means that they will have more long journeys to places including Folkestone Invicta and Hastings United.

But promotion from the Combined Counties League also has its travel advantages, according to Le Tissier.

"There are more teams closer to Gatwick airport than there were in the Combined Counties League (CCL). More teams will be within half-an-hour journey than in the CCL," he said.
