Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe backs Lewis Grabban to shine

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has backed striker Lewis Grabban to be a big success in the Championship.

The 25-year-old scored both goals in the Cherries' 2-1 win over Charlton.

They were Grabban's first goals since February, and Howe says the player's confidence will have been given a big lift by the goals.

"His two goals were very special strikes and hopefully it is the start of a good season for him," Howe told BBC Radio Solent.

Bournemouth were without last season's top scorer Brett Pitman, who was missing through injury, for their opening-day victory and Howe hopes Grabban can take his chance to shine in the Jersey-born forward's absence.

"People can get bogged down with statistics," said Howe. "He was a key performer for us towards the tail end of last season, and he might not have scored the goals but we had a striker who was prolific and he helped him.

"His confidence might have taken a little dip in front of goal but we've always believed in him.

"I'm delighted for him - he's deserved it with his hard work and attitude and he has remained focus."

The game was Bournemouth's first in the second tier of English football for over 23 years following their promotion last season.

And, while Howe was delighted with the result, he recognised the need to add to his squad before the end of the transfer window.

"I am happy with Brett [Pitman], Lewis and Wes [Thomas] but really that is all we have for recognised strikers and that is not enough," he added.

"We are looking but won't be rushed and panicked while these boys are fit. They deserve their chance and they will get it."
