Leon Clarke: Swindon Town show interest in Coventry striker

Swindon are interested in re-signing Leon Clarke, reports BBC Wiltshire.

The striker's first spell at the County Ground in 2011 ended after 22 days following a public clash with then-Town manager Paolo Di Canio.

He was loaned out to Chesterfield and went on to have spells with Charlton, Crawley and Scunthorpe.

The 28-year-old is now on a permanent deal at Coventry, but the club's precarious financial situation means they may have to sell players.

Swindon are looking to reinforce their forward line, following the departure of James Collins and Adam Rooney to Hibernian and Oldham respectively.

The League One club made a verbal offer to Bournemouth for forward Wes Thomas on Wednesday, but it is understood Swindon's bid fell short of the Cherries' valuation.

Town are also thought to be watching ex-Stoke striker Mamady Sidibe and Millwall forward Dany N'Guessan.

Clarke, who has played for 15 different clubs during his 10-year career, scored 21 goals in 31 games last season and finished joint-second top scorer in League One.

He made national headlines two years ago after having a physical row with Di Canio on the pitch following a League Cup loss to Southampton.

He had only been at the club 11 days when the clash happened and he left on loan for Chesterfield within two weeks.

Di Canio has since left Swindon and moved to Premier League Sunderland.
