Burnley progressed to round three of the Capital One Cup with victory over Lancashire rivals Preston.
North End knocked out Blackpool in the previous round but were unable to claim another Championship scalp.
A free-kick from full-back Kieran Tripper put the Clarets in front and Danny Ings sealed the win with a mazy run and shot past Thorsten Stuckmann.
Home skipper Jason Shackell preserved Burnley's clean sheet, clearing a Stuart Beavon header off the line.
