St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright pleased to end winless streak

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright said he was pleased to head into the international break off the back of a 4-0 league victory against Inverness.

Goals from Stevie May, Stevie MacLean and Dave Mackay made for a comfortable afternoon at McDiarmid Park and Wright said it has helped boost morale.

"I think we needed a win, not having won in five league games," said Wright.

"We're not panicking about it - but to go into the break not having won would have made it a long two weeks."

The win halted a run of five winless games as the strike partnership of May and McLean produced goals on either side of McKay's close-range finish after 27 minutes.

McLean bagged his second of the day with eight minutes of the match remaining to knock Caley Thistle off the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Wright said he was just as happy with the performance of his team as he was to pick up his first victory since a 4-0 demolition of Ross County in August.

"I think it was important that we won," said Wright. "But the manner in which we won and the way we played was equally important, because over the last few weeks we haven't hit the heights and standards we've set.

"That was almost a complete performance from the first whistle to the end against one of the best sides in the country at the moment, who've only conceded four goals in the league.

"To do it against Inverness shows the quality of the performance.

"I can't wait to see Dave Mackay's goal, in particular - to have your full-back inside eight yards finishing off a great move.

"The partnership with Stevie May and Stevie McLean is working well.

"Stevie McLean does a lot of unselfish work - he's working hard at his game, and you could see that today.

"I'm pleased they both got on the scoresheet - particularly for Stevie McLean to get a brace, because his work sometimes goes unnoticed."
